Here we are at 32 weeks! This post is barely making it since week 33 starts tomorrow, but who's counting? Between blowing a tire on my car (damn curbs, who put them there anyway?) and trying to get a bunch of house projects done, it's been a busy week! But now I've got a little bit of time to recap on the 2nd trimester, which was way more fun than the first!
Most notably, baby started looking like a baby!
During this ultrasound (at about week 15) baby was flipping and wiggling, and being just about the cutest thing I'll ever see living inside of my abdomen (sorry, gut bacteria). We still didn't know if we were having a boy or a girl, and the suspense was tough (kudo's to everyone on Team Green that still wait until delivery day, you are more patient that we are)! Our anatomy ultrasound was scheduled for week 19 to find out, but in the meantime I was looking up every old wives tale on the planet to try and figure it out on my own. Here's what those crones had to say:
- Chinese Calendar = Girl
- High Fetal Heartrate = Girl
- Very Little Morning Sickness = Boy
- Clearer Skin = Boy
- Cold Feet = Boy
- Prone to Sleeping on Right Side = Girl
- Craving Salty Foods = Boy
- Hairier legs? Not particularly = Girl
Evenly split! So while fun, the Old Wives were completely unreliable (don't ask them to fix a flat either). From the beginning I had a VERY strong feeling that we would be having a boy. I will admit, that feeling took me awhile to wrap my head around - for years and years I had envisioned myself raising a girl, and here I was thinking "boy" all the time! But the more I thought about raising a kindhearted, thoughtful, communicative man the more excited I got at the prospect. There was still a possibility that pink cat onesies were in my future, but I couldn't shake the feeling of "boy". By week 19 I was stoked either way.
Our anatomy scan was amazing! They look at and measure every appendage and organ they can find (which, luckily for us, was all of them on the list - thank you for cooperating baby!). It's so fun to see everything and recognize that being a foot, this being the spine, awww look at the fingers! and so on. They got a close up of baby's lips and I swear they already looked like Troy's! When it came time to see the sex Troy and I dutifully closed our eyes because we weren't ready for the surprise quite yet. That would come 3 days later at the fabulous reveal party that Mom and Randi put together.
It was a hilariously perfect cat themed party - the people who love me know me well, and Troy is an incredibly good sport. Our whole family made a point to come, which really made it special! Fun fact: 80% of orange cats are male and 99.07% of calico cats are female! So as our reveal my mom had us unwrap a stuffed cat to discover if it's an orange tabby (boy) or calico (girl). I guess you could say, "She let the cat out of the bag!" [HOORAY! PUNS FOR PARTIES!]
[dramatic pause - no spoilers]
IT'S A BOY!!
My instincts were totally right (let's hope I get a gut feeling on Powerball numbers next), and I couldn't be more thrilled! Having a son is going to be so much fun; knowing that I will have a little Troy-like creature running around fills my heart with such joy! I can't wait to meet him. :D
Finding out the baby is a boy was definitely the highlight of the second trimester. It was fun to nail down a name (still not telling!), buy some clothes, and start planning the nursery. Plenty of other good things were happening too, for instance I was one of the lucky girls who gets a return of energy in the second trimester. Good thing too because we had travel plans to visit Randi's family for a week in Montreal, Canada!
It was a fabulous final vacation to close out our pre-baby life. We had a ton of fun exploring the city, eating, kayaking, and meeting all the important people in Randi's life (who I felt like I already knew from all of our conversations!). Happily, pregnancy didn't stop me from enjoying the trip at all; I am really grateful that the plane rides went well and I wasn't too tired, achy, or moody to have the best time.
Another great part of the second trimester, my bump popped so I started to actually look pregnant. That felt good because for me it was outward justification for all on the inward feelings. Earlier in the pregnancy I almost felt like I didn't deserve to be tired because I wasn't that pregnant - I could still move freely and bend down after all! As my bump started to grow it was a lot more obvious that my body was, indeed, working quite hard and every symptom was justified!
I also started feeling the baby move! Right around 16 weeks I felt small sensations in my abdomen, like a little fishy swimming around. It was unlike any other feeling and I knew it was my babe! I was SUPER excited, although I had to wait impatiently for another 2 months or so before I could share the magic with Troy. After 24 weeks he could clearly see and feel our little guy from the outside. It still thrills me to watch my stomach bulge and spasm as our boy builds his muscles!
The cons of the 2nd trimester? I stopped being able to sleep comfortably and developed heartburn for the first time ever. Between the two of them some nights can be a real bitch. Luckily I have the opportunity to nap during the day, so I try not to complain too much. I also had a lot of rib pain? That was a surprise to me. Definitely not on any list I had read about "What They Don't Tell You About Pregnancy" so I wasn't expecting it. Apparently all your organs squish upwards which can lead to some really uncomfortable rib stretching for a while. Nothing a little Tylenol wasn't able to fix!
Overall the 2nd trimester was everything I was hoping it to be and I cherished it the best that I could. As a troller of message boards, I understand that not all pregnancies are easy or fun, and I'm eternally grateful to have the opportunity to enjoy all the highlights without being bogged down by pain or trauma. I'm still enjoying every moment, but am eagerly awaiting getting to the end and meeting this new person that I already love so much!
On that note, what have you been grateful for lately Perfect Stranger?
